The National Christmas Tree Lighting and Pageant of Peace is an important national
event heralding the coming of the holiday season. Every year since 1978 the same tree
has been decorated for the nation's Christmas, a stately Colorado Blue Spruce, but in
addition the event features many smaller trees symbolising all the states, territories
and the District of Columbia. Activities during the lighting event include performances
by guest artists and musicians, strolling costumed entertainers, and more than 50 volunteer
choirs, gospel groups, bell ringers, and cloggers providing live musical performances.
